Ever wanted to quickly set up a Homelab with a firewall but still want the leverage of working as if you are still within the same network? Well, I have read a couple of articles and for the most part, they are pretty good. The problem I found though is attention to detail in a few areas. So that is what I am going to do here. Below are the objectives:

  • Understand pfSense layout
  • Setup OpenVPN Server and Client

Below will display a diagram of what this setup will look like.

Network Layout for OpenVPN and PFSense

Understanding Basic pfSense Layout

So this is a pretty simple layout. Basically, the internet comes from a router or modem and into a switch. Now you could connect the modem or router straight into your pfSense box. However, I sometimes want to connect devices before the pfSense. The reason why pfSense needs at least two network interfaces is the below:

  • Wide Area Network (WAN) β€” Sets up the connection for pfSense to connect to the internet through the modem.
